Requirements for Renting a car for self drive in Uganda?
Payment For The Car.
As obvious as it might seem, every client should be able to pay for the car they intend to take on a trip. For proper planning, we always request that prior booking for your self drive car is made. Ideally, two weeks advance booking should be ideal (the longer the better). We normally ask our clients to make a full payment for their rental car at the time of pick up. If you intent to hire a car for Long Term Rental or simply do not have the full payment at the onset of the rental, You can discuss it with us to agree on an alternative payment plan.
A valid driver’s license
Anyone wishing to rent a Self drive car in Uganda must possess a valid driver’s permit. We advise that you carry your original licence when you are coming to pick up our rented self drive car. The license should be issued by the authority in Uganda or any state that meets the car rental company requirements. Apart from Long Term Car Rental clients, your driver’s license should be valid throughout the period of hire.
Minimum age
The general average age of consent, including Uganda, is 18. However, because of other factors discussed here below, a person at the age of 18 does not meet them. For example, you will most likely get your driver’s licence at 18. This means at 18yrs you have no driving record on book. In Uganda, Most Car Rental service providers including ourselves only accept persons from 21 years to 75 years to rent cars. We may make exceptions for younger drivers who are renting the smaller 2WD vehicles. If you are younger, please contact us so we discuss your situation. We will handle exceptions on a case by case and an extra surcharge may apply.
Acceptable driving record
You must posses a good driving record to rent any our self drive cars. Usually an acceptable driving record will cover a number of things. A driver previously fined a lot or convicted of reckless driving in the past 3 years may not qualify for a self drive car hire. You may however proceed with renting a driver to drive you in your rented car. You need a clean record without instances of knock and run or leaving the scene of accident in the last 2 years. We also demand that the client possesses no record of a stolen car, or used a car in any criminal way.
Passport and Proof of Identity
Before you rent a car in Uganda, you should have and avail proof of Identity. Acceptable forms of proof of identity include a valid passport whose details should match those of driver’s license. For non resdent clients, we may also demand for proof of residence so we ensure they match the country from which the passport and driver license were issued.
International driver’s permit
Non resident clients on self drive trips must possess an international driver’s permits. The International Driver’s permit should be valid, not suspended, revoked, or surrendered. Bring the International Driving permit and the original local driver’s license since the international driver’s license itself may not be allowed. Feel free to discuss with us your situation to advise if you need a local driver license or not.
Certifying and Signing an Agreement as Requirements for Renting
Finally, as we sign out, you have to sign. Clients must sign a car rental agreement. In the agreement, you will declare your living address, your destination, your driving record and declare that they meet our company’s Car rental requirements.
